Dumbbell Nebula vs Ring Nebula
Two planetary nebulae, and a clean demonstration of why catalogue magnitude misleads. The Ring (M57, NGC 6720) is listed at 8.80 and the Dumbbell (M27, NGC 6853) at 7.40, so the Dumbbell should be the easier target by a factor near 3.6. Angular size overturns that. M57 packs its light into 1.27 arcminutes and reaches roughly 9.1 magnitudes per square arcminute; M27, spread over 6.70 arcminutes, falls to about 11.3. The Ring is therefore the higher-contrast object by more than two magnitudes of surface brightness and survives moonlight and city glow that wash the Dumbbell out — at the cost of needing far more power to resolve its shape.
