Deep Sky Object Comparisons
Catalogue magnitude alone is a poor predictor of what a galaxy or nebula looks like at the eyepiece, because it says nothing about how widely that light is spread. Each comparison below sets two objects against each other on integrated magnitude, apparent diameter and the mean surface brightness that follows from them — the figure that actually decides which target survives an imperfect sky.
