Rigil Kentaurus

At 4.32 light-years, Rigil Kentaurus is one of the very nearest star systems to the Sun, and that proximity lifts it to apparent magnitude −0.01 — among the brightest stars in the sky. Designated Alpha Centauri and lying in the southern constellation Centaurus, it is a yellow G-type star with a B–V colour index of 0.71, closely echoing the Sun's own colour. Its absolute magnitude of 4.38 confirms a Sun-like intrinsic brightness, so the star appears luminous almost entirely because it is close rather than unusually powerful. A deep-southern declination of −60° places it beyond the reach of most northern-hemisphere observers, a permanent fixture instead of the far southern skies.
