An orange K-type star with a strong colour index of 1.52, Enif is the brightest luminary of Pegasus, the Winged Horse, though it carries only the Epsilon designation of that large constellation. It lies about 690 light-years away and appears at apparent magnitude 2.38. Its absolute magnitude of −4.25 marks Enif as an intrinsically luminous evolved star, its true brilliance greatly reduced by distance. The star represents the muzzle of Pegasus, set apart from the compact Great Square that forms the body of the celestial horse, its warm orange colour distinguishing it from the whiter stars of that well-known asterism.
