Spiral arms are regions of enhanced density in a disk galaxy where star formation is most active. In the Milky Way, the major arms — Perseus, Norma-Cygnus, Scutum-Centaurus, and Carina-Sagittarius — trace concentrations of young stars, HII regions, and molecular clouds.
