A spectrograph (or spectrometer) disperses light into its component wavelengths using a grating or prism and records the spectrum on a detector. High-resolution spectrographs on large telescopes can measure stellar radial velocities to within 30 cm/s, sensitive enough to detect Earth-mass planets.
