The snow line (or frost line) in a protoplanetary disk is the distance from the host star beyond which volatile compounds such as water, carbon dioxide, and ammonia condense into solid ices. It is critical for planet formation because solid surface densities jump at the snow line, promoting the growth of giant planet cores.
