Orbital resonance occurs when two orbiting bodies exert regular, periodic gravitational influences on each other because their orbital periods form a simple integer ratio. Resonances can stabilize orbits over long timescales (as in the TRAPPIST-1 system) or drive eccentricities that cause tidal heating.
