Nutation is a small, periodic oscillation superimposed on the steady precession of Earth's rotational axis, primarily caused by the varying gravitational pull of the Moon as it orbits in an inclined, elliptical path. Earth's dominant nutation term has a period of 18.6 years and an amplitude of 9.2 arcseconds.
