Multi-messenger astronomy combines observations across different carriers of information — electromagnetic radiation, gravitational waves, neutrinos, and cosmic rays — to study the same astrophysical event. The 2017 detection of neutron-star merger GW170817 in both gravitational waves and gamma rays inaugurated this era.
