Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) are among the most massive and luminous stars known, exhibiting dramatic, irregular photometric and spectroscopic variability. Giant eruptions can expel solar masses of material, as seen in eta Carinae, and LBVs are thought to be in a transitional phase toward Wolf-Rayet stars.
