Lenticular galaxies (Hubble type S0) are intermediate between spirals and ellipticals: they have a disk and central bulge like spirals but lack prominent spiral arms and have little gas for star formation. They are thought to be spiral galaxies that have used up or lost most of their interstellar gas.
