An HII region (ionized hydrogen region) is a cloud of ionized gas surrounding one or more hot O- or B-type stars whose ultraviolet radiation photoionizes the surrounding hydrogen. They are visible as bright emission nebulae and are the sites of active star formation in galaxies.
