The Drake Equation (1961) is a probabilistic argument estimating the number of active, communicating civilizations in the Milky Way. It multiplies rates of star formation, fractions of stars with planets, planets per star in the habitable zone, fraction developing life and intelligence, and average civilization lifespan. Most terms remain highly uncertain.
