The cosmic web is the large-scale structure of the universe consisting of vast filaments of galaxies and dark matter connecting dense nodes (galaxy clusters) and enclosing vast empty voids. This foam-like pattern grew from quantum fluctuations during inflation and is well reproduced by N-body cosmological simulations.
