A coronagraph is an optical device that blocks the direct light from a bright star, enabling observation of the faint surrounding region. Modern coronagraphs suppress starlight by factors of 10⁷ to 10¹⁰, enabling direct imaging of circumstellar disks and potentially Earth-like exoplanets.
