Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) are regular, periodic fluctuations in the density of visible baryonic matter, imprinted in the universe at recombination. The characteristic sound horizon scale (~500 million light-years) is used as a standard ruler to map cosmic expansion and constrain dark energy.
