Atmospheric escape is the loss of gas from a planet's atmosphere due to thermal energy (Jeans escape), stellar XUV radiation (photoevaporation), or stellar wind interactions. Photoevaporation is especially significant for exoplanets in close orbits and may explain the radius gap observed in the Kepler population.
