Adaptive optics (AO) systems correct for the blurring of starlight caused by atmospheric turbulence in real time, using a deformable mirror controlled by wavefront sensor measurements. With AO, ground-based telescopes can achieve near-diffraction-limited resolution comparable to space observatories.
