It is Beta Tauri, the second-brightest star of the constellation Taurus, and sits at the tip of one of the bull's horns near the border with Auriga. Appearing at magnitude 1.65 from a distance of 134 light-years, its absolute magnitude of −1.42 shows an intrinsic brightness above the Sun's. A northern declination of +28° places Elnath high in the winter sky for northern observers, where it links the figures of Taurus and neighbouring Auriga.
