An orange K-type star, Aldebaran glows with the warm tint captured in its high B–V colour index of 1.538. It is Alpha Tauri, the brightest star of the constellation Taurus, appearing to sit against the Hyades cluster as the bull's eye. At apparent magnitude 0.87 and a distance of 66.6 light-years, the star's absolute magnitude of −0.68 shows an intrinsic brightness moderately above the Sun's. Its northern declination of +16° makes Aldebaran visible from both hemispheres, and its distinctly orange light stands out among the largely blue and white first-magnitude stars of the northern winter sky.
