Eagle Nebula vs Lagoon Nebula
Both are emission nebulae in the summer Milky Way, and both are large — the Eagle (M16, NGC 6611) at 120 arcminutes, the Lagoon (M8, NGC 6523) at 45. The Lagoon is the brighter of the pair at magnitude 5.80 against 6.00, and because it concentrates that light into roughly a fifth of the area it reaches about 13.8 magnitudes per square arcminute where M16 manages only 16.1. That difference of more than two magnitudes of surface brightness is decisive: M8 is a binocular object from a reasonably dark site, while M16 rewards a nebula filter and rarely shows much beyond its embedded cluster without one.
