Observers who act on it are usually disappointed. The Helix spans 16.33 arcminutes — roughly half the apparent diameter of the Moon — and its light thins to about 13.1 magnitudes per square arcminute, while M57 concentrates the same order of flux into 1.27 arcminutes and reaches near 9.1. Four magnitudes of surface brightness separate them. M57 is a small-telescope certainty; the Helix asks for a dark site, a wide field and preferably a narrowband filter.
