At 33.8 light-years, Pollux is the nearest of the bright orange stars and the closest first-magnitude star to host a known planet. It is Beta Geminorum, and despite the Beta label it outshines Castor to rank as the brightest star of the constellation Gemini. This K-type star carries a B–V colour index of 0.991, consistent with its orange colour, and appears at magnitude 1.16. Its absolute magnitude of 1.08 indicates an intrinsic brightness modestly above the Sun's. A northern declination of +28° places Pollux high in the winter sky, where it and neighbouring Castor mark the heads of the celestial twins.
