Deep in the southern sky at a declination of −69°, Miaplacidus never rises for northern-hemisphere observers. Designated Beta Carinae, it is the second-brightest star of the constellation Carina, a white A-type star with a B–V colour index of 0.07. It appears at magnitude 1.67 from a distance of 113 light-years, and its absolute magnitude of −1.03 reflects an intrinsic luminosity above the Sun's. Its far-southern position makes Miaplacidus a familiar marker for observers below the equator, where it rides high through the southern autumn and winter as one of Carina's guiding lights.
