Mizar holds the Zeta designation of Ursa Major and the Flamsteed number 79, placing it among the stars that form the handle of the Big Dipper asterism. It is a white A-type star with a colour index of 0.057, near the neutral value of the class. Lying about 86 light-years away, Mizar appears at apparent magnitude 2.23, and its absolute magnitude of 0.13 indicates a luminosity somewhat above Sun-like stars. As the middle star in the bend of the Dipper's handle, it is one of the most frequently observed stars of the northern sky, long used as an informal test of eyesight for those able to resolve its close naked-eye companion.
