Luminous at absolute magnitude −3.30 but dimmed to apparent magnitude 2.10 by its distance of some 393 light-years, Almach is the Gamma star of Andromeda, also catalogued as 57 Andromedae. It is recorded with a B-type classification, though its measured colour index of 1.37 is notably high for that class. Almach sits at the eastern end of the chain of stars tracing the figure of Andromeda, set apart from the constellation's leading star Alpheratz at the opposite end. Its position well away from the Solar System means the star's true brightness considerably outstrips the modest impression it makes on the night sky.
