Escape Velocity

Escape velocity is the minimum speed needed for a free object to escape the gravitational field of a massive body without further propulsion. For Earth it is 11.2 km/s; for the Sun it is 617 km/s. Black holes have escape velocities exceeding the speed of light, defining their event horizons.
