An orange K-type giant with a pronounced colour index of 1.521, Eltanin is the brightest star of Draco, the Dragon, despite carrying only the Gamma designation of that sprawling northern constellation. It lies about 154 light-years away and shines at apparent magnitude 2.24. Its absolute magnitude of −1.13 marks a genuine luminosity above the solar norm, the light of an evolved giant whose cooler surface gives it its distinctly orange colour. As the leading light of the Dragon, Eltanin is the principal naked-eye star marking the head of Draco, a region that winds through the northern sky between the two Bears.
