Beta Aurigae, known as Menkalinan, is the second-brightest star of the constellation Auriga and lies 81 light-years from Earth. A white A-type star, it shows a nearly neutral B–V index of 0.077 and appears at apparent magnitude 1.9. Its absolute magnitude of −0.08 indicates an intrinsic brightness moderately above the Sun's. A northern declination of +44° makes Menkalinan circumpolar for much of the northern hemisphere, where it stands beside brilliant Capella high in the winter sky as part of the pentagon-shaped figure of Auriga, the charioteer.
