Protoplanetary Gap

A gap in a protoplanetary disk is a ring-like clearing in the dust and gas distribution, often formed when a growing planet accretes material and repels nearby disk material through gravitational torques. ALMA has resolved gaps in dozens of disks, providing evidence of planets forming in real time.
