Kirkwood Gaps

Kirkwood gaps are specific ranges of semi-major axis in the asteroid belt where asteroid number densities are dramatically reduced. They occur at orbital resonances with Jupiter (3:1, 5:2, 7:3, 2:1), where repeated gravitational kicks pump eccentricities until asteroids cross Mars's or Earth's orbit and are ejected.
