Active Galactic Nucleus

An active galactic nucleus (AGN) is an extremely luminous, compact central region of a galaxy powered by accretion of matter onto a supermassive black hole. AGN subtypes include Seyfert galaxies, quasars, blazars, and radio galaxies, differing mainly in viewing angle and accretion rate.
