A star of the Big Dipper, Merak holds the Beta designation of Ursa Major and forms one of the two stars at the outer edge of the Dipper's bowl. It is a white A-type star with a near-neutral colour index of 0.033. Merak lies about 80 light-years away and appears at apparent magnitude 2.34; its absolute magnitude of 0.40 marks a luminosity somewhat above Sun-like stars. Together with the neighbouring star Dubhe, Merak forms the pair of pointer stars whose line, extended across the sky, has long guided observers toward the north celestial pole, a use that makes it one of the most practically important stars of the northern heavens.
