Regulus is a hot blue-white B-type star whose negative B–V index of −0.087 marks a high surface temperature. Catalogued as Alpha Leonis, it is the brightest star of the constellation Leo and lies almost exactly on the ecliptic, so the Moon and planets regularly pass close by. It appears at magnitude 1.36 from a distance of 79 light-years, and its absolute magnitude of −0.57 indicates an intrinsic luminosity above the Sun's. A near-equatorial declination of +11° makes Regulus visible from essentially every inhabited latitude, anchoring the sickle-shaped figure of Leo in the spring sky.
