At a distance of approximately 11.5 light-years, Procyon is one of the Sun's closest stellar neighbors. Light that we observe from Procyon today left the star roughly 11 years ago, making it a near neighbor in galactic terms.

Procyon has an apparent magnitude of +0.40, making it a bright and prominent star that is readily visible to the naked eye. It is one of the more conspicuous stars in its region of the sky. Observers will note its white hue, which corresponds to a B-V color index of +0.432.
