Caph

11Bet Cas

Lying about 55 light-years away, Caph is one of the nearer bright stars and holds the Beta designation of Cassiopeia. It is a yellow-white F-type star with a colour index of 0.38, intermediate between the white A stars and the yellow G class. Caph shines at apparent magnitude 2.28, and its absolute magnitude of 1.16 shows that its place among Cassiopeia's brighter stars owes much to its proximity, apparent and true brightness lying only a little apart. Together with Schedar and their neighbours, Caph forms one end of the constellation's distinctive W-shaped pattern, a fixture of the northern circumpolar sky visible throughout the year.
