Recorded as an M-type star with a red classification, Capella carries a B–V colour index of 0.795 and glows at apparent magnitude 0.08, ranking it among the brightest stars visible from the northern hemisphere. It is Alpha Aurigae, the dominant light of the constellation Auriga, and lies 42.8 light-years from Earth. A far-northern declination of +45° makes Capella circumpolar for much of the northern hemisphere, wheeling around the pole without ever setting. Its absolute magnitude of −0.51 indicates an intrinsic output well above the Sun's, so that even at more than forty light-years the star remains a conspicuous member of the winter sky.
