Rigel's absolute magnitude of −6.93 ranks it among the most intrinsically luminous stars on StarFYI, a beacon whose light travels 863 years to reach Earth yet still arrives at apparent magnitude 0.18. Designated Beta Orionis, it marks the bright foot of the constellation Orion and shows the blue-white colour of a B-type star, corroborated by a B–V index of −0.03. Its position near the celestial equator, at declination −8°, renders it visible from virtually every inhabited region of the planet. The sheer distance over which Rigel remains a first-magnitude star underscores an output thousands of times greater than the Sun's — the defining trait of the sky's most remote brilliant stars.
