Phecda holds the Gamma designation of Ursa Major and marks the inner corner of the Big Dipper's bowl, where the bowl meets the handle. It is a white A-type star with a near-neutral colour index of 0.044. Lying about 83 light-years away, Phecda appears at apparent magnitude 2.41, and its absolute magnitude of 0.38 places its luminosity modestly above that of the Sun-like stars, apparent and true brightness lying close together as is typical of a nearby star. As one of the seven principal stars of the Dipper, it belongs to the most familiar star pattern of the northern sky.
