Beta Crucis, better known as Mimosa, is the second-brightest star of the Southern Cross after Acrux. A blue-white B-type star, it registers a hot, negative B–V index of −0.238 and appears at magnitude 1.25 from a distance near 279 light-years. Its absolute magnitude of −3.41 marks an intrinsic luminosity many times the Sun's. Set at a declination of −59° within the constellation Crux, Mimosa lies deep in the southern sky and never rises for most northern observers. With Acrux and the other Cross stars it forms one of the most recognisable asterisms of the southern celestial hemisphere.
