Epsilon Canis Majoris, or Adhara, is the second-brightest star of the constellation Canis Major after Sirius, though it lies far beyond its famous neighbour at about 405 light-years. A blue-white B-type star, it carries a negative B–V index of −0.211 and appears at magnitude 1.5. Its absolute magnitude of −3.97 reveals an intrinsic luminosity many times the Sun's, sustaining its brightness across that distance. From a southern declination of −28° Adhara sits low in the sky for northern observers while riding high through the southern winter, a prominent light beneath the dazzle of Sirius.
