Spica is a hot blue-white B-type star, its negative B–V index of −0.235 betraying a high surface temperature. Catalogued as Alpha Virginis, it is by far the brightest star of the constellation Virgo, shining at apparent magnitude 0.98 from a distance of about 250 light-years. An absolute magnitude of −3.44 reflects an intrinsic luminosity well beyond the Sun's, which sustains its brightness across that distance. Positioned just south of the celestial equator at declination −11°, Spica is visible worldwide and serves as a convenient waypoint for locating Virgo along the spring ecliptic.
