Lying roughly 88 light-years away, Sabik holds the Eta designation of Ophiuchus and ranks among the brighter stars of the Serpent-Bearer. It is a white A-type star with a colour index of 0.059, close to the neutral value of the class. Sabik shines at apparent magnitude 2.43, and its absolute magnitude of 0.27 indicates a true luminosity moderately above solar levels. Positioned in the southern part of the large constellation, near the border with Scorpius, Sabik is one of several bright points marking the lower reaches of Ophiuchus as it straddles the zodiac, where the Sun passes each year in early December.
