The nearest star in this group at about 36 light-years, Denebola marks the tail of Leo and holds the Beta designation of the Lion. It is a white A-type star with a colour index of 0.09, close to the neutral tint characteristic of the class. Denebola shines at apparent magnitude 2.14; its absolute magnitude of 1.93 is among the faintest true luminosities here, so its visibility owes far more to its proximity than to any great intrinsic output. Indeed, its apparent and absolute magnitudes lie close together, the signature of a nearby star. Positioned at one end of the constellation opposite the bright star Regulus, it completes the outline of the Lion's body.
