Alnitak is a rare O-type star, the hottest spectral class, its blue colour matched by a negative B–V index of −0.199. Designated Zeta Orionis, it forms the easternmost star of Orion's Belt and lies about 736 light-years away. At apparent magnitude 1.74 it is the brightest O-type star of the night sky, and its absolute magnitude of −5.03 marks an intrinsic luminosity thousands of times the Sun's. A near-equatorial declination of −1° makes Alnitak visible worldwide, where it anchors one end of the Belt that makes Orion among the most readily recognised constellations.
