Tidal Disruption Event

A tidal disruption event (TDE) occurs when a star passes close enough to a supermassive black hole to be torn apart by tidal forces. About half the stellar debris is flung away while the rest falls into the black hole, producing a distinctive multi-wavelength flare that fades over months.
