Roche Limit

The Roche limit is the minimum distance at which a satellite held together only by self-gravity can orbit without being torn apart by tidal forces from its host body. Moons or asteroids closer than the Roche limit are disrupted, forming rings; the same principle applies to extremely close-orbiting exoplanets.
