Shaula

With an absolute magnitude of −4.6, Shaula is intrinsically far more luminous than the Sun, holding its brightness across a distance of about 571 light-years. It is Lambda Scorpii, marking the stinger of the constellation Scorpius, and a blue-white B-type star whose negative B–V index of −0.231 signals a hot surface. The star appears at magnitude 1.62. A southern declination of −37° keeps Shaula low for observers at northern latitudes, while from the southern hemisphere it forms, with nearby stars, the curved tail that gives Scorpius its striking outline.
