Fomalhaut stands in comparative isolation, the solitary bright star of the southern constellation Piscis Austrinus and long nicknamed the Lonely Star of autumn evenings. Designated Alpha Piscis Austrini, it is a white A-type star 25 light-years distant, with a B–V colour index of 0.145. At apparent magnitude 1.17 it is the only first-magnitude star across a wide, dim stretch of sky, and its absolute magnitude of 1.74 shows an intrinsic brightness a little above the Sun's. A declination of −29° keeps Fomalhaut low for northern observers, where its lone glow low over the horizon makes it easy to identify.
